The Tiger.
Of all the animals that we have been fortunate enough to see in the wild it is the tiger that has made the most lasting impression. Unlike lion they are difficult to see. We once spent eight consecutive days on elephant back in the Corbett National Park and caught only one fleeting glimpse as a tigress moved away in heavy cover. However the waiting and the tracking are worth every minute to us. These animals, now on the verge of extinction, are the ultimate predator, powerful, elusive, graceful and beautiful. In 1900 there were estimated to be 100,000 tigers throughout their then range, in India alone there were 40,000 animals in the wild. The latest estimate put the figure at less than 1,700 in India and those remaining are being killed at the rate of one a day. Mankind should be ashamed.
The following are a series of images taken in Ranthambore National Park of a tigress and her two sub adult cubs, these shots were taken nine years ago. I often wonder whether the tigress lived on, or whether her cubs ever grew to maturity, sadly it is difficult to be optimistic.
