The Ritz opened its doors on 24 May 1906. It was the dream of Cesar Ritz, formerly the manager of the Savoy Hotel. The building was designed by Charles Mewes and Arthur Davies. Mewes had previously worked on the design of Ritzs hotel in Paris. For many years Ritz personally supervised the running of the hotel and introduced a level of service, opulence and luxury that was a revelation to Edwardian society. He was responsible for bringing the doyen of Chefs Auguste Escoffier to the hotel and this standard of cuisine set the benchmark worldwide. Cesar Ritz is long gone and the hotel has changed hands a number of times in the last 100 years, most recently it was purchased by the Barclay brothers through their company Ellerman Investments in 1995 and they have spent a reported £40m restoring it to its former glory.
